The Commodity Futures Trading Commission said on 28 October 2026 that it will host an industry roundtable on 15 December to discuss whether US derivatives markets can viably move to 24/7 trading. The meeting builds on the request for comment on 24/7 trading that the CFTC published earlier this summer.

What will be discussed

According to the CFTC, the roundtable is meant as a public forum on the changing market structures in derivatives, including overnight trading, tokenization, infrastructure and staffing needs, and operational readiness. Participants from across the industry will discuss how the Commission can promote responsible innovation while protecting market participants and preserving the integrity and resilience of US derivatives markets.

CFTC Chairman Selig said the agency “will not take a one‑size‑fits‑all approach to 24/7 trading”, and that the roundtable is meant to hear the industry’s views on round-the-clock trading across different asset classes.

Practical details

The event takes place at the CFTC’s headquarters in Washington. It will be open to the public and livestreamed on CFTC.gov, though the number of people attending in person may be limited and visitors will go through security checks. The agenda, speakers and registration details will be published later. Members of the public can nominate speakers by email to the CFTC.

Why it matters to traders

The topics on the agenda, from overnight trading to staffing and operational readiness, are the practical questions any move to round-the-clock trading would raise for exchanges, clearing houses, brokers and the traders who use them. The roundtable is a discussion, not a rule proposal: the CFTC describes it as a venue for dialogue that builds on this summer’s request for comment, and says it wants to hear views on 24/7 trading asset class by asset class rather than set a single approach.
